Astrology by no means is a mere fortune telling game. The purpose or goal of the subject is to drive away the fear of unknown and thus to provide a scope to build a stronger sense of self. The subject is much more than the sun sign or a newspaper horoscope. This is as expansive as the Universe and as unique as you.
Though the subject is vast, yet I have gathered much information and experience in last twenty five years of deal with it. I accommodated the relevant portions from the acknowledged sources into this site.
I am confident that the information will be of great use for all. With the help of this site you will be able to build your own acumen even if you don't have any basic knowledge about the subject.
What is Astrology?
Different astrologers described the term in different ways. This may be called a pseudo science interpreting the supposed effect of the heavenly bodies on human existence.
The word Astrology originally derived from the Greek root ‘astron’, which refers to stars and ‘logia’ which means word or speech.
The best definition of the subject is found in the book ‘Astrology for Yourself’ by Demetra George and Douglas Bloch. In this book, the authors described it as “...Is a language, art and science that study the relationship between the cycles of celestial bodies and the affairs of people on earth.”
This is a tool that can help us to glimpse into our purpose in life and gain a stronger sense of self. It can teach us how to live in harmony with the universe by exploring our inner potentials.
He who knows himself knows the best.
Is Astrology Science?
Many a times people ask whether the subject is a science or not as if the subject which does not come under the preview of science losses its authentication. Some astrologers even get involved in this argument and put all their efforts to prove the subject as science.
This is not a science, at least not by today’s definition of the term. The science can only tell the positions of the several planets when you were born. You need to know mathematical calculations to place the planets in different houses of your birth chart and the role of science is over.
Next comes your interpretation part of it. This is the secret, and, only few know about it.
You may call it science, arts, pseudo science, occult or by any name- it hardly matters. But it works, and when it is in the hand of a well educated and properly trained astrologer it must be hundred percent correct. It is the gift of ancient civilizations and it is survived for thousands of years.
The American Federation of Astrology has properly said if it didn’t work, it would long ago have taken its place alongside them in the footnotes of history.
Differences among Vedic, Western and Chinese systems
The difference between Vedic and Western systems involves some complicated astronomical mode of calculation. Vedic system follows the sidereal zodiac whereas, Western follows tropical zodiac.
According to the western Sun signs, Sun enters Aries on 21st of March but according to the Vedic calculation it enters Aries on the 14th of April. The western system makes calculation and predictions based on the present position of the planets as observed by the satellites.
In Indian systemastrologers follows the planetary positions as seen from earth today by taking into account the tilting of the North Pole by making corrections accordingly. There is a difference of 24 degrees in the above cited two systems.
But the Chinese system is a completely different; this system does not consider the position of Sun, Moon, or the other planets at the time of your birth. There is a cycle of twelve zodiac signs named after twelve animals as rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and boar. From the year of your birth you can consult the Chinese zodiac calendar to find your own Sign.
